A Niti Aayog committee has given its approval to a government proposal to test three rapid transport systems using pod cars. Pod cars are futuristic driverless vehicles that ply on pre-defined routes.

The clearance makes for global transport companies, including one backed by US space agency NASA, to enter India. Metrino, Ultra Global and NASA’s skyTran have received Niti Aayog’s approvals for the pod cars proposal mooted by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways led by Nitin Gadkari, Mint reported on Tuesday.

The pod cars will be tested in one-kilometre-long stretches, the paper reported, adding that the length can be extended to 15-20 kilometres upon successful pilots.

Among the trio, only Ultra Global’s technology is in commercial use. Ultra’s pod vehicles are made of steel with rubber tyres that run on specially made tracks, while skyTran vehicles are magnetically levitated. Metrino pods are suspended from overhead rails, according to the report.

The panel was led by Niti Aayog member VK Saraswat and comprised experts from railways, road transport and urban development ministries.
