The leading counter-terrorism officers and loyalists of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina foiled an assassination attempt on her life four weeks back, according to a CNN News 18 news report.
The report stated that on August 24, the plan was to assassinate Sheikh Hasina as she took her evening stroll by six to seven Special Security Force (SSF) personnel.
The report stated that four independent sources confirmed the attempt.
A leading official in Bangladesh’s National Security Intelligence told News18 that Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants were part of the assassination attempt. JMB jihadis would distract the loyal personnel of Hasina’s with a series of explosions around her office. This would distract the other bodyguards and allow the rouge guards and assassins to escape.
The JMB is a terror group, which has previously taken responsibility for many bomb blasts in Bangladesh. It is an internationally recognized organization that aims to replace the democratically-elected government with Islamic State.
A joint team of Indian and Bangladeshi intelligence officers picked up their plans after listening in on the communications between JMB militants and the rogue SSF guards.
On being privy to the developments Sheikh Hasina stayed at a location in Dhaka, where she was conducting a private meeting. The loyal guards made an inner ring around her, with the suspects nabbed immediately after. The report stated that the suspects are still being interrogated by Bangladeshi authorities.
