All major trade unions, including those affiliated to ruling Congress and Opposition BJP, today decided to go on a day-long nationwide general strike a day ahead of the presentation of the budget next year.

The strike has been called on February 28 to protest price rise, corruption and non-implementation of labour laws, among other things, CPI leader and AITUC General Secretary Gurudas Dasgupta told PTI after a meeting of the trade unions here.

Budget is likely to be presented on February 29, as 2012 is a leap year. A joint statement signed by top leaders of these unions was adopted after a meeting. Besides Dasgupta, other signatories to the statement include INTUC President G Sanjeeva Reddy, BMS General Secretary B M Rai, CITU General Secretary Tapan Sen and HMS General Secretary D A Mittal.

"It is significant that all trade unions have given this joint strike call to protest the anti-worker economic policies of the government and it is being held a day before next year's budget is to be tabled in Parliament," Dasgupta said.

Other issues to be highlighted during the strike include strike enforcement of labour laws, universal social security for unorganised workers, no contractualisation of jobs of perennial nature, equal pay for equal work, removal of ceilings on bonus and gratuity and assured pension.
