A Chennai-based startup has built an unmanned biryani takeaway service, that it said is the first of its kind in India.

Bai Veetu Kalyanam or The BVK Biryani has set up the outlet in Kolathur, Chennai. It is equipped with 32-inch screens where customers can browse their menu and place orders.

Payments can be made by scanning QR codes or using cards. Once orders are ready, customers can tap the "open door" option on the touchscreens to collect their boxes.

"I got my order within four minutes," a food blogger said on Instagram.

BVK Biryani promises its customers authentic biryani prepared using coal and firewood.

"We use meats, vegetables and classic Basmati rice to bring the taste of biryani the way it was meant to be made," the startup says on its website.

BVK's biryanis are priced between Rs 220 and Rs Rs 449.

Their menu comprises an array of other dishes too, including the mutton paya, idiyappam and parotta and halwa.

Other startups are also experimenting with automated food service.

Last year, Freshot Robotics had unveiled an "idli ATM" in Bengaluru to package and dispense food in a quick process.

The startup touted its foodbot as the first fully automated cooking and vending serving South Indian delicacies.

They also announced plans to set up the machines at offices, railway stations and airports and diversify their menu with dosas, rice and juice.
