Bengaluru-based pastry artist Joonie Tan's recent cab ride turned into a distressing experience, highlighting a pervasive issue – drivers being on the phone while driving. Tan, a popular pastry chef at Lavonne Café, with a significant following on Instagram, took to social media to recount an unsettling ride where her Uber driver’s incessant phone conversations led to a severe headache.

Originally from Malaysia, Tan's frustration wasn’t merely about her discomfort but raised a critical question about road safety. "Uber driver keep talking on the phone. I am having a headache from him talking non-stop now," she shared on her Instagram Stories.

She also questioned whether Uber enforces rules against drivers using phones while driving, a practice that endangers passengers and other road users alike.

Tan’s immediate step was to lodge a formal complaint with Uber although she had three other suggestions: politely ask them to stop, put on noise cancelling headphones or report on the app.

"Hopefully when they see enough reports on such matters, the company will take this up seriously," she remarked. Her post quickly gained attention, sparking discussions among her over 52,000 followers about the responsibilities of ride-sharing companies in ensuring passenger safety.

The following day, Uber responded to Tan’s complaint, acknowledging the issue and offering an apology. In a message shared by Tan, Uber stated, "Uber partners are expected to maintain a high standard of professional service in all trips. This includes providing a safe and comfortable ride for passengers. Reports of dangerous driving are taken very seriously."

Further, the company assured Tan that they would review the driver-partner’s account and had taken steps to prevent her from being paired with the same driver in future.

"We have also taken steps to prevent your account from being paired with this driver partner for future trip requests made through the app," Uber communicated.

Expressing cautious optimism, Tan responded, "Uber India called and emailed. Hoping this is not just a courtesy call and real action to be taken."
