Remember Baba ka Dhaba incident from last year? An elderly couple that sold home-cooked meals from a tiny kiosk in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar, became an overnight success when a YouTuber shared their story on his YouTube channel in October last year.

Kanta Prasad and his wife Badaami Devi's story of making just enough to buy for the next day's menu and sometimes not even that for 30 years featured in the viral video, prompted thousands to make a beeline outside the couple’s eatery for food, selfies and donating money.

Followed which food delivery services and restaurant finder, Zomato, also listed the eatery on its website. Prasad had opened a new restaurant and was also able to settle all his debts and buy smartphones for himself and his family. However, life has come full circle for the octogenarian couple. After his restaurant for which he had invested Rs 5 lakhs and even hired three staff members, was unsuccessful and shut down in February, Prasad and his wife are now back at their roadside old dabha.

“The daily footfalls at our dhaba have declined because of the ongoing COVID lockdown, and our daily sales have come down from ₹3,500 before the lockdown to ₹1,000 now. The income is not sufficient for our family of eight," Prasad told Hindustan Times.

“The average monthly sales never crossed Rs 40,000. I had to bear all the losses. In hindsight, I feel we were wrongly advised to open a new restaurant. Of the total investment of Rs 5 lakh, we managed to recover only ₹36,000 from the sale of chairs, utensils, and cooking machines, after the restaurant shut down," Prasad added.

Last year, a cotroversy had unfolded when Prasad filed a complaint with the Delhi police over the misappropriation of donations to his eatery against YouTuber Gaurav Wasan of 'Swad Official' who had posted the old couple's video online.

While Wasan denied the allegations saying "All the money that came into my account has been transferred to Prasad. The police had asked me to reveal my bank statement which I have already given. When Baba comes to know the truth, then finally the outcome will be right."
