An 11-year-old boy from Hyderabad died due to choking, after eating more than three pooris at a time while having lunch at school, the police said. the incident came to light after the boy's father said in a complaint to police that he received a call from the school informing him about his son consuming "more than three puris" together leading to breathlessness.
The school staff had rushed the child, a Class 6 student, to a nearby private hospital but the hospital staff referred him to a private super-specialty hospital for better treatment. At the second hospital, the boy was declared dead, PTI reported.
Children dying after choking on food is not unheard of. In January, an 11-month-old boy in Hong Kong died after choking on milk, according to a South China Morning Post (SCMP) report. The baby’s mother, a 25-year-old woman, called the police after the boy reportedly choked on the milk and lost consciousness. The baby was rushed to a hospital in Hong Kong by emergency service personnel who arrived at their home in the city's San Po Kong area. However, he did not survive and died in hospital soon after.
In October 2023, an 82-year-old South Korean man died of a heart attack after eating a food delicacy with a "live octopus" a report in The Independent said. The incident occurred in Gwanju, situated in the southern part of the country, where fire station officials received a report that the dish named "san-nakji" or "live octopus" was stuck in the man's throat. When authorities reached the spot, the elderly man was already in a state of cardiac arrest. The officials performed CPR on the man, but to no avail.
In India, a 49-year-old truck driver named Suresh in Kerala’s Walayar lost his life after choking on three idlis during an eating contest. The event was organised by a local club as part of the Onam 2024 celebrations. Suresh attempted to eat three idlis at once to win the competition but soon began to feel uneasy. People managed to remove the idlis and rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he died soon after.
