After being initially announced at E3 2019 with the name Rainbow Six Quarantine, the next game in the franchise is now finally ready to be unveiled. It's now called Rainbow Six Extraction and Ubisoft will show off more at its virtual event, Ubisoft Forward on June 12th.
The game was originally announced for early 2020 but was unfortunately delayed due to the pandemic. It has since then gone through two title changes, Quarantine and Lockdown before the company has now settled on Extraction.
The only thing we have to go on so far is a little teaser with a description that reads "Unknown. Sentient. Consuming."
Seeing as how another Tom Clancy franchise Ghost Recon went the pseudo futuristic route with Breakpoint, it looks like Ubisoft isn't quite done yet with the setting. If we go by the previous two names of the project, Quarantine and Lockdown, it could hint at a self-aware AI that is somehow infecting the world around it. Or it could be something else entirely, who knows?
Extraction will also move away from competitive scene like the previous title siege in favour of a three player co-operative experience, since that game is still being supported and tournaments lined up for the eSports season in 2021. It makes sense to try something different, to lure a fresh batch of players into the franchise, possibly ones that don't have much interest in the competitive, multiplayer arena.
