Huawei, the world’s third-largest smartphone maker, is involved in an intense competition with global players such as Samsung and Apple to become the leading smartphone player in the world
Chinese tech giant Huawei has zoomed past global rivals like Samsung and Apple as it received a patent for foldable smartphones, reports LetsGoDigital. The news puts Huawei at the forefront of foldable display technology which is widely speculated to be the future of smartphones.
What is foldable display technology?
Foldable display smartphones consist of phones with a flexible display which can be either bent or folded at various pre-specified points into different forms and shapes.
What does Huawei’s foldable smartphone patent pertain to?
As per Huawei’s patent, the smartphone will consist of two displays which will be foldable from the middle. When folded, the device will act as a phone and after opening the device will work like a tab.
In October 2017, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's consumer business group, in an interview to CNET had said that the company is all set to launch its first foldable display smartphone in 2018.
"We already have a working sample," Yu said. "We have two screens. But we still have a small gap [between the screens]. That's not good, and we should get rid of that gap," he added.
Why is the news important?
Foldable display technology sounds like the future but the idea isn’t new. In fact, companies such as Sony, Samsung, LG have been researching on this as far back as early 2000s but were still struggling to come up with a breakthrough design and manufacture foldable devices on a mass scale. However, with Huawei receiving the patent now, foldable phones could soon be a reality.
