Developed on an all-new platform the Intra has a payload of 1100kg which is a step above the Ace range of mini trucks
Tata Motors, India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, will launch a compact truck called Intra to address the need for a performance vehicle for intra-city and rural application.
Developed on an all-new platform, the Intra has a payload of 1100kg which is a step above the Ace range of mini trucks. The Intra plugs the gap between the Ace range and the Tata 207, which is a pick-up truck.
While the Ace range, with starting price of Rs 2.3 lakh for the Zip variant, has a payload of 0.6 tonne to a tonne, the Tata 207 has a payload of a tonne and prices starting at Rs 6 lakh. The Intra has a payload of 1.1 tonne and will be positioned between the Ace and the 207.
Tata Motors' officials refused to divulge pricing details which they said would be made public at the time of the Intra’s commercial launch, expected by the end of this month.
The micro and mini truck segment have seen doubling of volumes since 2016-17, according to data supplied by Tata Motors. The segment ended 2016-17 with volumes of 116,353 units but 2018-19 ended with 233,707 units.
The Intra will be launched in a Bharat Stage IV (BS-IV) version but will be upgraded to BS-VI when the required fuel is made available, said RT Wasan, Sales and Marketing (commercial vehicles) Tata Motors.
The Intra, to be manufactured at the Pantnagar facility in Uttarakhand, will sport a direct injection 1.4-litre diesel engine that generates 70hp of peak power. While the platform is new, the engine has been borrowed from the Super Ace.
The engine is mated to a speed gearbox. The Intra is also the first commercial vehicle to have a gear shift advisor which guides the driver to select the correct gear to get optimum fuel efficiency.
The Intra has got a series of features including power steering, mobile charging point, lockable glove box, dashboard and door trims' storage spaces, electronic cluster and optional air conditioning.
The Intra comes with a driver plus passenger seating configuration and has a maximum speed of 80 km per hour. According to company officials, the Intra can be used for a variety of purposes such as mineral water distribution, fruits and vegetables, food grains, industrial goods, construction materials, LPG distribution and plywood. The Intra was first showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo in Greater Noida where Tata Motors had also showcased an additional variant of the vehicle with a smaller 800cc engine having a payload of a tonne. The Great Diwali Discount!
