Chennai has been grappling with an acute water crisis, facing a daily water deficit of at least 200 million litres, with the four reservoirs supplying water to the city running dry.
Polling for the Lok Sabha seat was scheduled for April 18, along with the other constituencies of Tamil Nadu, but was cancelled on April 16 following the recovery of a huge amount of cash allegedly from an associate of a DMK leader.
The river, called Naganadhi, was the primary source of water for the region but had been dry for around 15 years.
The Election Commission is learnt to have prepared a recommendation in this regard to be sent to the president.
