Russia has previously blamed the West for the explosions last month that ruptured the Russian-built Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines on the bed of the Baltic Sea.
Germany halted the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea gas pipeline project on Feb. 22, just two days before Russia sent its troops into Ukraine in what it calls a "special military operation", and after the Kremlin formally recognised two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine.
Gas prices have hit record levels in Europe, driving a surge in inflation and adding to challenges for policymakers trying to haul Europe back from an economic slowdown.
Russian state-run gas giant Gazprom has said the Nord Stream 2 pipeline will complement existing pipelines running through Belarus and Ukraine and help meet Europe’s increasing demand for affordable natural gas even as critics accuse Moscow of using gas as a bargaining chip
At a White House press conference with the new German leader, Biden, a longtime opponent of the decade-old pipeline project to Germany from Russia, said Russian forces crossing into Ukraine would trigger a shutdown.
The contentious Russian project has been strongly opposed by both Ukraine and the United States.
