Doctor Ajay Swaroop, Chairman, ENT Department, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, said: “We are not getting any active cases of Mucormycosis right now. Now we are seeing old cases that either have residual disease or patients coming with disease in one area that was treated and now they have developed black fungus in another area.”

The Delhi Health Department said in a statement that the city has been allocated a total of 51,540 vials of Amphotericin-B for the treatment of the disease, out of which 42,960 vials "have been received and distributed to hospitals, and 8,080 vials are awaited".

Mucormycosis and other fungal infections are most commonly seen as an opportunistic infection. They are found in those with low underlying immunity either due to a diabetes, cancers particularly hematological malignancies, etc. or as a side effect of prolonged/irrational use of certain drugs like steroids, immunosuppressive drugs for management of other disorders including COVID-19, the minister explained.

Harsh Vardhan, who chaired the 29th meeting of the high-level Group of Ministers (GoM) on COVID-19, apprised the members that of the total numbers, 34,940 patients had Covid (85.5 percent), 26,187 (about 64.11 percent) were co-morbid for diabetes, while 21,523 (52.69 percent) of those infected were on steroids.
