India has 12 major ports under the control of the central government -- Deendayal (erstwhile Kandla), Mumbai, JNPT, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Kamarajar (earlier Ennore), V O Chidambarnar, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia).
Container cargo in terms of TEUs (twenty foot equivalent unit) at India's 12 major ports dropped 32.28 percent to 1.74 million in the the first quarter of the current fiscal, according to the latest data from the Indian Ports' Association (IPA).
India's twelve state-run major ports handled 141.9 million tonnes of shipments in the quarter ended June 30, compared with 176.7 million tonnes the previous year, the IPA data showed.
Coking coal imports witnessed a dip of 24.05 percent to 7.47MT in April and May this year.
Miners body FIMI said the iron ore exports have taken a nosedive and actual exports done by ports are even lesser as the 8 MT ore handled by ports in April-December period also include domestic transportation of the cargo.
