The Commerce Ministry launched Government e-Marketplace, an online platform for public procurement, in August 2016 with the objective of creating an open and transparent procurement platform for government, which runs in several lakh crore.
The portal comes under the administrative control of the commerce ministry.
The govt had floated an RFP for design, development, operation and maintenance of GeM on March 21, this year. A new and revised RFP is likely to be floated soon after concerns of various stakeholders
The move is aimed at making GeM an autonomous body, which will help in taking all the decisions including those related to finance at a faster pace, an official told PTI.
The move is aimed at bringing in more transparency and streamlining the government procurement, estimated at Rs 10,000 crore a year.
