Refusing to say if India has sought a waiver of sanctions from the US as to continue purchasing crude oil from Iran, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said he has articulated the country's position on importing oil from the Persian Gulf nation in November and "there is nothing new to repeat."
India had contracted to import about 25 million tonnes of crude oil from Iran in the fiscal year 2018-19 (April 2018 to March 2019), up from 22.6 million tonnes imported in 2017-18.
Speaking at The Energy Forum here, he said international oil prices touching a four-year high of USD 85 per barrel is a "challenge" that has resulted in fuel prices continuing to rise despite a one-off excise duty cut and public sector units (PSUs) subsidising fuel.
"Two of our oil companies have made nominations to purchase Iranian oil in November," he said speaking at The Energy Forum here. "We do not know if we will get waiver (from US sanctions) or not."
The two ministers met last evening amid concerns of high fuel prices adding to farmers' distress, particularly in the upcoming Rabi crops season, sources said.
Pradhan announced that state-owned fuel marketing companies will purchase all the bio-gas from these plants at Rs 46 per kg in a bid to cut reliance on imports for meeting oil needs.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs raised the procurement price of ethanol derived from 100 per cent sugarcane juice to Rs 59.13 per litre from the current rate of Rs 47.13, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told a news conference.
"We have provided BS VI fuel in national capital territory. There would not be any uncertainty from our side. Whatever we have committed, to provide BS VI fuel in the country by April 1, 2020, we stand by that commitment," Pradhan said.
