The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is a national political party in India. The party was founded by Kanshi Ram in 1984 to represent people of Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (SC), and Other Backward Classes (OBC), as well as those who belong to religious minorities. Its election symbol is an elephant. Currently, Mayawati is the national president of the party. In 2007, the party won the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections with a sole majority and Mayawati became the chief minister of the state. Interestingly, the electoral result showed the party’s majority in the polls was achieved in large part because it attracted a majority of upper castes votes from their traditional party – the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BSP-led government became the first in the history of Uttar Pradesh to complete its full five-year term. However, the party could not retain power in the next Vidhan Sabha polls. The party managed to secure only 80 seats in the 2012 Assembly elections as against 206 in 2007. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the BSP became the third-largest national party of India in terms of vote percentage with gaining 4.2 percent of the vote across the country but winning no seats. In the 2019 general elections, it was the second-largest party in UP with 19.3 percent of votes. More
