"As per the Supreme Court's order dated 13th March 2018, the requirement of Aadhaar for opening new bank accounts and applying for Tatkal passports under the relevant laws continues," the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), which issues the 12-digit biometric identifier, said in a late evening tweet.
The five-judge constitution bench headed by CJI Dipak Misra said in its judgment that Aadhaar is still necessary to avail social benefits, services and subsidies.

The government has decided to shift enrolment centres to "secure locations" with a view to provide convenience and secure Aadhaar enrolment and update facilities for residents of the country, Electronics and IT Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
"As on March 5, number of Aadhaar cards linked with PAN is 16,65,82,421. Further, as on March 2, 87.79 crore current accounts and savings accounts have been linked with Aadhaar," Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
The top court directed the CBSE not to make Aadhaar number mandatory for enrolment of students appearing in NEET 2018 and other all India exams.

"The effective date for mandatory submission of PAN and Aadhaar number with requisite documents at the time of opening new folio or account, will now be April 1, 2018 instead of February 15, 2018.
