Modi slammed the Opposition for blaming EVMs for their losses and alleging that Election Commission was partisan towards BJP
In an exclusive interview to CNN News 18's Group Consulting Editor Brajesh Kumar Singh and Political Editor Amitabh Sinha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about the prospects of the Opposition in this election, the violence in West Bengal, and making Varanasi a special seat.
On the Opposition's consistent attack against him, PM Modi said "abusing Modi" is the only way for them to garner attention, and that 'Modi' is the central theme of the Opposition's campaign. "It is understandable if Modi is the theme of NDA, but Modi is also the Opposition’s theme," he added.
On violence in West Bengal, Modi cited the example of panchayat and assembly polls in the state, saying houses of the winning candidates were burnt, and they resorted to hiding in Jharkhand. He also expressed his discontent with people and political parties who chose to remain silent on the issue. "The silence of the people who believe in democracy and the ones who are neutral is the most worrisome aspect because the pattern of forgiving everything else due to blind hatred for Modi can cause a lot of damage to the nation," he said.
He even condemned the TMC government for not giving permission to land choppers and conduct rallies across West Bengal.
In highlighting the stark contradiction between him and the Gandhi family, PM Modi quoted BR Ambedkar, saying, "He always said the biggest enemy of democracy is dynasty politics. Dynasty politics is very dangerous. Unfortunately, the Congress followed the path of dynasty politics and everyone who came out of the Congress dynasty further followed the same path. This is a threat to democracy."
On making Varanasi a special seat, PM Modi told CNN News18, "If you want to work for the country, you need to create models. The strategy should be the same. For example, I created Sabarmati River Front in Gujarat, which became a model and attracted a diverse range of people to the country. My efforts are towards working to create a nation according to the 21st Century norms. The old-fashioned thinking will not work anymore."Besides, Modi slammed the Opposition for blaming EVMs for their losses and alleging that the Election Commission is partisan towards the BJP. "In the first three phases of the election, EVM wasn’t an issue, only Modi was abused. In Phase 4, it became 50:50 — 50 percent abuse was directed at Modi and 50 percent at EVMs. After Phase 6, this figure has become 30 percent. So, it is 30 percent abuse for Modi, 30 percent for EVMs and 30 percent for the Election Commission. They are preparing grounds for their defeat and are planning who to blame for the loss," Modi added.Get access to India's fastest growing financial subscriptions service Moneycontrol Pro for as little as Rs 599 for first year.
