'Delhi Chalo' call: Ministers to hold another meeting with farmer leaders on February 12

Farmer unions have several demands, including the enactment of a law to guarantee a minimum support price (MSP) for their crops.

According to news agency PTI, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said the Centre has invited them for a meeting to discuss their demands on February 12.

He said three Union ministers — Piyush Goyal, Arjun Munda and Nityanand Rai — will arrive in Chandigarh on February 12 to hold talks with a deputation of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha.

The first meeting with the three Union ministers was held on February 8 in which a detailed discussion was held with the leaders of farmer organisations which planned ‘Delhi Chalo’ march to press for their demands, including a law to guarantee a minimum support price for crops, was held.

The meeting is expected to held at the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration in Sector 26 in Chandigarh, a day before the farmers’ proposed ‘Delhi Chalo’ march.

Delhi Police Advisory

The Delhi Police issued a traffic advisory in view of the proposed farmers' protest, alerting commuters about restrictions on movement of vehicles at three borders of the national capital. Traffic restrictions/diversions will be imposed from Monday for commercial vehicles.

Traffic restrictions/diversions will be imposed at Singhu Border from Monday for commercial vehicles and from Tuesday for all type of vehicles, it said.

Temporary jails ahead Of farmers' march 

The Haryana government has converted two large stadiums into makeshift jails ahead of the planned march by thousands of farmers to Delhi on Tuesday.

Haryana has sealed the border with Punjab at Shambhu near Ambala. Big arrangements are in place at the border in Jind and Fatehabad districts to stop the march.

Why are the farmers protesting?

Farmer unions have several demands, including the enactment of a law to guarantee a minimum support price (MSP) for their crops.

The farmers are also demanding implementation of the Swaminathan Commission's recommendations, pensions for farmers and farm labourers, farm debt waiver, withdrawal of police cases and "justice" for victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
