Why lifting of sanctions on Iran oil will help India
Mar 09, 08:03

If sanctions on export of crude oil from Iran are lifted, it is good news for India, which is looking to diversify its sources. Initially, the US was nudging Iran to agree to the terms in the 2015 nuclear deal, which was withdrawn by its former president, Donald Trump. In 2015, Iran had signed a deal with world powers, promising to halt nuclear activity if sanctions against it were lifted. But now the bilateral negotiations seem to be more wideranging. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, India has increased the number of its crude oil suppliers to 39 countries in FY22 from 27 in FY07, adding countries including Columbia, Russia, Libya, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
