Hackers have made a killing of late selling data of millions of Indian users across online portals like BigBasket, Mobikwik and Dunzo. Experts feel such breaches may continue. Why? The pandemic has forced a shift to online for routine chores like buying groceries. But the sudden surge in users and lack of awareness and requisite checks on cybersecurity makes firms vulnerable. For hackers, armed with sophisticated algorithms, it is easier to figure out a firms' weak spots. Also, it isn't mandatory in India to report breaches, unlike in countries like the US. The personal data protection bill gains significance here in not only protecting user data but also holding companies accountable for such breach.
