Posting messages online that are offensive or false with the intention to cause harm could get you penalised under Section 66A of the IT Act. The rule was prone to misuse by police and several have been arrested for supposedly online posts. It was scrapped by the Delhi High Court in a landmark judgement in 2015. A huge relief you thought? But no. Police continue to file cases under this section because it was a ‘zombie law'—rules that courts have struck down but continue to exist in legal books. There are at least 745 cases pending under the rule, observed the Supreme Court. Terming this shocking, it asked the Centre for a response.
