US police have denied rumours that gangster Goldy Brar, who was the mastermind of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala's murder in 2022, has been shot dead.
The Fresno police department in California said that reports of Brar being shot down in a gang rivalry incident are "untrue".
In response to media queries, Lieutenant William J Dooley said: "If you are inquiring because of the online chatter claiming that the shooting victim is 'Goldy Brar', we can confirm that this is absolutely not true," reported news agency IANS.
The police department said that though a shootout incident did take place, the victim was not Goldy.
"We have received inquiries from around the world this morning as a result of misinformation being spread on social media and online news agencies. We are not sure who started this rumour, but it caught on and spread like wildfire. But again, it isn’t true. The victim is definitely not Goldy,” Dooley said.
The response comes a day after several media outlets reported that Brar has been killed by the police in US.
Brar, who has been designated as a terrorist by the Union home minister, is a close associate of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. He also has links with the Pakistan-based Babbar Khalsa International.
