After the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a semiconductor wafer manufacturing plant at a cost of Rs 3,706 crore at Jewar near Noida, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and termed it as a historic step towards 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'. The chief minister stated that India is moving towards becoming a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing with Uttar Pradesh at the forefront of this revolution.
CM Yogi tweeted: "Under the leadership of PM Modi, the Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of a semiconductor unit in Uttar Pradesh's Yamuna Authority region (YEIDA) - a historic step towards 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'."
"With an investment of Rs 3,700 crore, the unit will manufacture display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, automobiles and various other devices. India is now moving towards global leadership in semiconductor manufacturing and UP is emerging as a hub for high-end electronics and semiconductor production," he added.
While making the announcement after the Union Cabinet meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed that after the display driver, display panel production would also come to India and the plant would meet Foxconn's requirements for rest of the world.
As per a release, the Jewar plant is designed to handle 20,000 wafers per month and produce up to 36 million chips monthly. The unit will create about 2,000 jobs, it added.
Jewar will be India's sixth semiconductor development unit, with the other five being — i) Micron Technology at Sanand, Gujarat; ii) Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) in partnership with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC), Taiwan, at Dholera, Gujarat; iii) Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) at Morigaon, Assam; iv) CG Power, in partnership with Renesas Electronics Corporation, Japan and Stars Microelectronics, Thailand, at Sanand, Gujarat; and, v) Kaynes Semicon at Sanand, Gujarat.
