Murty is the wife of Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy. The well-known author has contributed to English and Kannada literature and had retired as the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation last year on December 31.
On being nominated to the Rajya Sabha, she told ANI, "I am happy and at the same time I feel I have been given more responsibility. It is very nice of him, he (PM Modi) appreciated my work, I want to thank him. I am happy that I will get a bigger platform to work for the poor."
The 73-year-old, whose nomination comes on International Women's Day, was awarded the Padma Shri in 2006 and the Padma Bhushan in 2023.
After receiving Padma Bhushan award for her social work, Murty had said, “I owe this award to the people of India. I hope my recognition today inspires the younger generation to take up social welfare as a vocation. It is needed for the continuous development of our great nation. I always feel that generosity of a few is hope for a million."
Murty was born on August 19, 1950 in Karnataka's Shiggaon. She started her career as a computer scientist and engineer, and went on to become the first female engineer hired at Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (Telco).
She also founded the Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University.
