The Supreme Court will soon be linked to the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) platform, which can track the pendency of cases, said Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on September 14.
"Laudatory step by the Supreme Court and CJI DY Chandrachud Ji. Such harnessing of technology will further transparency and enhance the justice delivery system in our country," said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X (formerly known as Twitter).
The top court was previously outside the purview of the NJDG, which is a repository of data related to the pendency and disposal rate of courts. It tracks cases from the taluka to the national level. Currently, the portal shows data only up to the high court level.
"A small announcement. It is a historic day. It is a unique and informative platform developed by the NIC and the in-house team of the Supreme Court. Now, at the click of a button, you can see real-time information on the pendency and disposal of cases, year-wise, total pendency of registered and unregistered cases, and the number of cases decided quorum-wise," the CJI said.
He said the NJDG will ensure transparency and accountability in the judicial domain.
What is NJDG?NJDG is a real-time tool designed to identify, manage, and reduce the pendency of cases. It provides data on the pendency of cases across all the high courts and district courts in the country. Using NJDG, one can check the pendency of civil and criminal cases at the state, district, and taluk levels. The CJI has been hinting at integrating the Supreme Court into NJDG since early 2022.
“Now we have all three tiers of the Indian judiciary on the NJDG portal. NJDG is recognized as a significant innovation under the ease of doing business initiative of the Government of India,” stated the Supreme Court press release. Now, with just a click of a button, one can access case-related information and statistics such as case institution, pendency, and disposal of cases, as well as case types and a year-wise breakdown of the Supreme Court of India.
NJDG has been developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) in close coordination with the in-house software development team of the Computer Cell Registry. It features an interactive interface and an analytics dashboard. The entire database will be periodically updated on the NJDG portal.
