India has achieved a significant milestone by producing 1 billion tonnes of coal —a landmark that Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed as a proud moment, reflecting the nation’s dedication to energy security and self-reliance.
“A Proud Moment for India! Crossing the monumental milestone of 1 Billion tonnes of coal production is a remarkable achievement, highlighting our commitment to energy security, economic growth and self-reliance. This feat also reflects the dedication and hardwork of all those associated with the sector,” the Prime Minister wrote on X.
Official data from the Ministry of Coal released last month reveals that coal remains a crucial energy source for India, contributing 55 per cent to the national energy mix. The country holds the fifth-largest geological coal reserves globally and is the second-largest consumer.
As a key component of India’s energy security, the coal sector plays an essential role in supporting the nation’s industrial and economic progress.
Union minister for coal and mines, G Kishan Reddy informed in a post on X that India has crossed a monumental 1 billion tonnes of coal production.
"With cutting-edge technologies and efficient methods, we’ve not only increased production but also ensured sustainable and responsible mining. This achievement will fuel our increasing power demands, drive economic growth, and ensure a brighter future for every Indian. Under the visionary leadership of Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji, India is on its path to becoming a global energy leader," he said.
He also congratulated the workforce of the coal sector, serving as the backbone of the nation's energy security.
