In what could complicate matters for social media and other platforms, the upcoming Data Protection Board under the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Bill, may be empowered to block content.
If this comes into fruition, platforms will have to deal with yet another regulator or government body which can issue blocking orders. As of now, blocking orders are issued under the IT Act, IT (Blocking) Rules, and under certain provision of the Indian Penal Code.
According to sources, the DPB may block access to any public information hosted on any 'computer resource' if it is 'satisfied that it is necessary or expedient so to do'. The reasons have to be recorded in writing. Another major change in the new version of the bill is regarding the countries where data will be allowed to be transferred from India. Read details here

Parliament Monsoon Session Live Updates: Digital Personal Data Protection Bill to be introduced as money bill, alleges MP Manish Tewari
In what could be a controversial move that may even lead to legal challenges, the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill will be introduced in the Parliament as a Financial Bill, Lok Sabha MP Manish Tewari said on August 3.
Congress MP Tewari, who was also a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) that studied that Personal Data Protection (PDP) Bill, shared a circular which said the President (Draupadi Murmu), has recommended the introduction of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Bill, under Article 117(1) of the Constitution and consideration under Article 117 (3). Article 117 deals with with provisions of financial bills.
The DPDP Bill will be introduced by Minister for Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Lok Sabha for consideration. It is worth noting that the bill was tabled exactly one year after the government withdrew the Personal Data Protection (PDP) bill.
