Dust storm, heavy rain disrupt air traffic, Metro in Delhi; over 70 flights diverted, 24 delayed

Over 70 flights were diverted from the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and more than a dozen were delayed after a dust storm hit Delhi in the evening.

Flight operations to and from the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport here was majorly hit today as a dust storm hit the city in the evening, with sources at the airport confirming over 70 diversions and more than two dozen delays.

The operations of almost all the airlines — domestic and international — were affected as the runway had to be closed down and the flight services suspended for a while, the sources said.

The airlines informed the passengers about the delays and diversions on Twitter.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has reportedly said that the Blue Line operations were being terminated as an overhead equipment cable on Blue Line was cut off after a tree fell on it during the storm. Operations on the Blue, Violet and Magenta lines continued to remain affected. 

The underground metros in Delhi were operational but at a reduced speed.

Metro services between Indraprastha and Karol Bagh metro stations in Delhi were disrupted after a tree fell on the tracks of the route between Rajiv Chowk to RK Ashram metro stations. Metros going towards Dwarka were also affected.

The sudden weather changes also interrupted CM Arvind Kejriwal's programme in Delhi's IP Extension.

"There is a circulation of a western disturbance in North West India. We had forecasted that the weather will be adverse for 2-3 days. This thunderstorm will continue for the next 48 to 72 hours," Charan Singh, Scientist, Indian Meteorological Department told ANI.

Dozens of flights were diverted to cities such as Jaipur, Amritsar and Lucknow, the sources said.

Vistara said its Delhi-bound flights from Srinagar, Lucknow, Bhubaneswar, Mumbai and Goa were diverted.

"Till about 7.15 PM, over 40 diversions were reported. There could be over two dozen delays," a source said.

International flights from Katmandu, Riyadh, Colombo, Jeddah, Kabul were delayed even as flights from Tokyo, Newark and Colombo were diverted to other places, the sources said.

The India Meteorological Department yesterday predicted that Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh would witness thunderstorm accompanied by squall.

Its forecast said parts of Rajasthan might also see dust storm.

Thunderstorm over the northern hill-states and its effect in the plains is due to a western disturbance, the IMD said.

"Thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds are also very likely at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, Vidharbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Telangana, north coastal Andhra Pradesh, south interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Lakshadweep and Kerala," the IMD said in an advisory said.
