One person died after a massive fire broke out in a slum area near Rithala Metro Station in the national capital on Friday night, officials said.

According to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), firefighting and cooling operations were carried out through the night to control the blaze. One body was recovered from the site, while another injured person, a child, was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital for treatment.

"As per the preliminary information given to me, this was a slum of ragpickers and there were around 300-500 slums... The administration is making complete arrangements here. We have coordinated with the concerned authorities and a temporary shelter has been made for them at the community centre," said Soumya Saurabh, District Magistrate, North-West Delhi.

She said the affected people will be shifted and arrangements will be made for their food and basic facilities, following their resettlement.
