Not comfortable with Mr, Ms or Mrs? TISS offers you gender-neutral alternative 'Mx'

From now on, instead of just Mr, Ms, Mrs and Dr, there will also be Mx on the forms for the students’ details to be filled out before convocation, which is scheduled to take place in May 2018.

Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has introduced a gender-neutral honorific for its students in their certificates, making it India’s first institution to take such an initiative.

From now on, instead of just Mr, Ms, Mrs and Dr, there will also be Mx on the forms for the students’ details to be filled out before convocation, which is scheduled to take place in May 2018.

A second-year MA Criminology and Justice student, Sai Tejo, wrote to the administration asking for such a move. Sai told DNA that the idea behind such a rule is to make things easier for people who do not identify with the conformist gender rules of the society and want an alternative to Mr and Ms.

Sai was quoted by DNA saying, “Gender non-conforming people or those who do not associate themselves with the gender binaries of male and female are often forced to pick a gendered salutation in application forms and documents. I wrote to the administration, requesting them to add 'Mx' which is a gender-neutral salutation that students can opt for and their graduation certificates will carry that title."

The institute approved Sai’s suggestion and included Mx in the list of salutations to be used in convocation certificates of students.

It was not sent out as an official mail, but the students were informed by the authorities and they have spread it through social network and personal messages.

Commending the institute’s initiative, Harish Iyer, an equal rights activist, said that being called by a gender pronoun or prefix that one does not relate to is the worst thing to happen to anyone. “I hope that other institutions, too, add it to their list.”
