The United States has welcomed India's decision to allow foreign universities to set up campuses here as part of the recently approved National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Under NEP 2020, the Centre seeks to encourage "high-performing Indian universities" to set up campuses overseas, while also facilitating select foreign universities (those from among the top 100 universities in the world) to operate in India.

"A legislative framework facilitating such entry will be put in place, and such universities will be given special dispensation regarding regulatory, governance, and content norms on par with other autonomous institutions of India," the Education Ministry said in the policy document which was approved by the Union Cabinet on July 29.

The US Department of State's Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs tweeted, "Welcome news that foreign universities may establish campuses in India & that Indian universities may do the same overseas. We look forward to opportunities for American and Indian universities to partner & collaborate on research to advance our understanding of the world."

This particular move by the government is aimed at promoting India as a global study destination that offers premium education at affordable costs. It seeks to make India an attractive destination for foreign students, while also attempting to retain the large number of Indian students who leave the country every year for higher education.
