The man who allegedly attacked Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during 'Jan Sunvai' in the national capital on Wednesday has been sent to a five-day police custody.
He was produced in Tis Hazari Court by the Delhi Police late on Wednesday night.
The accused, identified as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, hails from Rajkot, Gujarat.
During the weekly Jan Sunvai at Delhi CM's Civil Lines camp office, Sakariya allegedly handed over some papers to Rekha Gupta before suddenly grabbing her hand and attempting to pull her and then he attacked her. PWD Minister Parvesh Verma said that the chief minister sustained injuries to her hand, shoulder and head.
The accused's mother said that he is a passionate dog lover who was disturbed by the Supreme Court’s recent order directing stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to be rounded up and shifted to shelters.
In her first reaction after the attack, Delhi CM said, "I was traumatised after the attack, now I'm feeling better."
The Delhi CM asserted that such attacks cannot break her resolve to serve the people and that Jan Sunwai meetings will continue to take place.
According to police sources, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is likely to review the security arrangements of CM Gupta after a detailed report of the incident is submitted by the police. The Delhi chief minister has been accorded 'Z' category security by the police as per security guidelines of the MHA outlined in the 'Yellow Book', which details protection protocols for VIPs and VVIPs.
