Petrol and diesel prices touched a high in May before cooling off in the past week.

As per today's revision, a litre of petrol costs Rs 77.96 in Delhi, Rs 80.60 in Kolkata, Rs 85.77 in Mumbai and Rs 80.94 in Chennai.

And price of diesel is at Rs 68.97 per litre in the national capital, Rs 71.52 in Kolkata, Rs 73.43 in Mumbai and Rs 72.82 in Chennai.

The government is working on certain short-term measures to ease the burden of spike in petrol, diesel prices on consumers, sources told Moneycontrol.Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had earlier said that the government will intervene to reduce prices.

So what are the measures that the government can take in the short as wel as long-run to ease the pressure on consumers. And how do higher petrol/diesel prices impact the economy?
