The postmortem report on the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital reveals extensive injuries inflicted before her death. The findings also indicate evidence of forceful penetration, confirming sexual assault.
Key findings, as per an India Today report, from the autopsy include:
>> Injuries: Over 14 injuries were documented on the victim's head, face, neck, arms, and genitals. >> Cause of Death: The cause of death was identified as "manual strangulation associated with smothering." >> Manner of Death: The death was ruled as a homicide. >> Sexual Assault: There was evidence of forceful penetration, indicating sexual assault. >> Genital Findings: A "white, thick, viscid liquid" was found in the victim's genitalia. >> Additional Findings: The report noted haemorrhaging in the lungs and blood clots in the body, but there were no signs of fractures. >> Further Analysis: Samples of blood and other bodily fluids were sent for additional analysis.
The case has garnered significant attention, prompting the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognizance. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, will hear the matter on August 20.
Meanwhile, the parents of the young doctor have voiced distrust towards West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, criticising the handling of the case by state police.
The victim's father revealed that he has provided the CBI with a page from his daughter's diary, but he chose not to disclose its contents. He questioned the commitment of those publicly demanding justice, citing recent incidents where protestors were suppressed, such as the police crackdown on supporters at a football match chanting "We want justice".
The victim’s mother also expressed her frustration with Banerjee, accusing the Chief Minister of trying to stifle protests. She condemned the imposition of prohibitory orders designed to prevent gatherings of protestors, viewing it as an attempt to suppress public outrage.
The post-graduate trainee doctor's body was found in a seminar room at RG Kar Medical College on August 9. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested by the Kolkata Police the next day. Dissatisfaction with the initial investigation, however, led the Calcutta High Court to assign the CBI to the case.
The shocking incident has triggered widespread outrage and nationwide protests by healthcare workers, who are demanding enhanced security measures.
