Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut has been granted Y-plus category security on September 7.

The decision has been taken in view of a renewed threat to the actor after she spoke about drug use among a section of the film industry, following the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. This development also comes against the backdrop of the recent spat between Ranaut and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut after the actress compared Mumbai to Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK).

Taking to Twitter, the actress expressed her gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for granting her security.

The home ministry has decided to accord Ranaut Y-plus category security through a paramilitary force, a ministry official said, reported news agency PTI.

In India, security is provided to high-risk individuals by the police and local government once the threat assessment is undertaken by central security agencies, which is subject to periodic review.

Depending on the threat perception to the person, the categories of security cover is divided into four tiers: Z+ (highest level); Z; Y and X.

Here's what the different levels of security cover provided to public figures in India mean:

Special Protection Group (SPG)

Formed in 1988 after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984, this level is controlled and supervised by the Centre. The SPG consist of special operations commandos who carry ultra-modern assault rifles and wear dark-visor sunglasses with in-built communication earpieces, bulletproof vests, gloves and elbow/knee pads.

Earlier, five people including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former PM Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi in the country were provided this security cover. But now, as per the latest SPG Act, only Prime Minister Narendra Modi enjoys the protection of the over 3,000-strong SPG force. As for other levels of security, it can be granted to anyone depending on inputs received by Centre or state governments regarding the threat faced.

Z+ Security

Z+ category includes 36 personnel including over 10 NSG commandos. Apart from the commandos being well equipped with advanced weapons, the dignitaries under this level are also provided with bulletproof car and escorts in three shifts. Additional security arrangements are also made depending on the location.

Z Security

Protectees under this level of security are provided with 22 personnel, including four or five National Security Guard (NSG) commandos. This entails security cover by the Delhi Police, ITBF or CRPF personnel and one escort car. The commandos are equipped with sub-machine guns and modern communication equipment to ensure the safety of the protectee.

Y Security

This is considered to be the fourth level of security in India. The dignitaries that come under this security cover are provided with around 11 security personnel, including one or two commandos and two private security officers (PSOs). While Y has one gunman for mobile security and one (plus four on rotation) for static security, Y plus entails two policemen on rotation for security and one (plus four on rotation) for residence security.

X SecurityConsidered to be the fifth level, this provides the VIPs with two personnel to ensure their safety. This security cover entails the most basic protection and involves armed police personnel.
