Congress MP Imran Masood from Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur, on Tuesday, sparked controversy by describing Dr. Umar Mohammad alias Umar-un-Nabi, the alleged mastermind behind the November 10 Delhi car blast, as a "misguided youth".
Interacting with CNN-News18, Masood commented on the key accused’s self-recorded video, which surfaced early the same day, remarking that “martyrdom is a part of Islam; however, suicide is not. Committing suicide is considered a sin in Islam.”
He added, “Misguided people cannot preach Islam. Those who resort to violence should read the Quran; they would understand that killing innocent people is not Islam. Islam does not teach betrayal of one’s own nation.”
Masood also took a dig at the government’s handling of Al Falah University, alleging that authorities are “deliberately trying to destroy minority institutions of learning.”
His comments come amid heightened scrutiny of the university following Enforcement Directorate searches in connection with the Red Fort blast investigation.
A week after the Red Fort blast that killed 13 people, a chilling video of Umar has surfaced online. In the clip, the alleged key mastermind defends suicide attacks as “martyrdom operations,” calling suicide bombing “misunderstood” but “known in Islam,” while acknowledging the objections raised against it.
Umar had already been under scrutiny after a multi-state module linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind was busted across J&K, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, leading to eight arrests, including three doctors.
Hours after the module was exposed, a powerful explosion tore through a Hyundai i20 near the Red Fort on the evening of November 10, killing 15 people and injuring more than 20. Forensics later matched the explosives to nearly 3,000 kg of material seized earlier.
Umar had planned an attack around December 6 and died when the partially assembled VBIED detonated prematurely.
