A video of a passenger onboard a train allegedly getting assaulted for complaining about a caterer overcharging him has surfaced online.
The incident, shared on Reddit in the ‘r/indianrailways’ group, has spread online on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram.
The video is a 19-second-clip that shows a group of men, some wearing catering uniforms, surrounding a passenger and attacking him inside a sleeper coach.
The post on Reddit said: “Passenger complained to RailSeva about the caterer overcharging. RailSeva takes the PNR and seat number, passes them to IRCTC, which informs the contractor, who then sends his men to beat the passenger.”
In the video, other travellers can be seen watching the incident, but no one steps in to help.

According to the post, the alleged assault happened after the passenger complained on Railway Seva about being overcharged.
The complainant’s PNR and seat details were allegedly shared with IRCTC, which then informed the contractor. The contractor reportedly sent men to confront the passenger.
A user on X shared the video alleging the incident took place on Somnath Jabalpur Express (Train No. 11463) and criticised the current grievance redressal mechanism: “Sharing passenger details with the very people the complaint is against makes no sense. Complaints should be verified by a third party and refunds processed directly without putting passengers at risk.”
The Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Jabalpur responded on social media, saying, “We’re sorry for the inconvenience. The complaint is from July 15, when the train was in the Baroda division. We’re now in contact with IRCTC to cancel the pantry contract on this train.” The Indian Railways has not released an official statement as yet.
The train involved is said to be the Somnath-Jabalpur Express (Train No. 11463). People online criticised the system for allowing such incidents to happen.
One user wrote, “How can you give the complainant’s details to the same people the complaint is about? That’s unsafe and irresponsible.”
While some said the complaints should be handled by an independent team, and refunds should be given without putting passengers in danger.
Several users also shared similar experiences where they said they were forced to take back complaints or pressured to say the issue was resolved, despite the fact that they were not.
