Bihar Polls 2025

Hasanpur is one of the 243 assembly constituencies in Bihar. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Janata Dal United (JDU), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Congress are the main parties in the state. Tej Pratap Yadav from RJD is the sitting MLA from the Hasanpur seat. In 2020, Tej Pratap Yadav registered a win in the Hasanpur constituency. In 2015, JD(U) candidate Raj Kumar Ray won from the seat.

Hasanpur, a block in Samastipur district’s Rosera subdivision, is part of the Khagaria Lok Sabha seat. Though it became an Assembly constituency in 1967, Hasanpur gained prominence when the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) fielded party supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav’s elder son, Tej Pratap Yadav, as its candidate for the 2020 Assembly elections.  Tej Pratap was previously the MLA from Mahua in Vaishali district.
Lalu Yadav sought a safer seat for his son, unsure whether Tej Pratap – known for his eccentricity and frequent controversies – could retain Mahua. His concerns were not baseless. While the RJD held onto Mahua, its victory margin shrank to 13,000 votes, down from over 21,000 in 2015 when Tej Pratap first won.

A key reason for shifting Tej Pratap to Hasanpur was its sizable Yadav population, which makes up over 30 percent of voters. The move paid off, as he won by 21,139 votes. However, his performance as an MLA has been disappointing. Over the past five years, he rarely visited the constituency. The RJD will now need a replacement, as Lalu Prasad Yadav suspended Tej Pratap from the party for six years in May 2025 for damaging the family and the party’s reputation.

In Hasanpur seat during the Bihar Assembly Election 2020, Tej Pratap Yadav of the RJD emerged as the winning candidate. The runner-up was Raj Kumar Ray representing the JD(U). The contest concluded with a victory margin of 21139, reflecting the intensity of the battle. The voter turnout stood at 58.64% , showing the level of public participation in the electoral process.
