FSSAI panel clamps down on junk food; bats for tax, strict labelling norms

The food regulator, FSSAI has now proposed a set of measures, including tax, strict labelling norms and ban on their advertisements on children's shows, to check the consumption of food products high on fat, sugar and salt content.

The report by the 11-member panel on 'Consumption of Fat, Sugar and Salt (FSS) and its health effects on Indian population' is a pointer to cutting down consumption of unhealthy food products and reducing the rising burden of chronic diseases like cancer and diabetes.

The FSSAI had constituted this panel consisting of experts drawn from different fields like medicine, nutrition and dietetics from well-known medical research and academic institutions.

"The report recommended having balanced diet which should provide around 60-70 percent of total calories from carbohydrate, 10-12 percent from protein and 20-30 percent from fat," the FSSAI said.
