Union Minister and BJP leader Shantanu Thakur, on April 8, stated that he had been sent a letter by the terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The letter warned of dire consequences if the National Register of Citizens (NRC) were to be enforced in West Bengal, stating intentions to "burn the entire country."
Additionally, this letter, written in Bengali, threatened to target the 'Thakurbari', a sacred site for the Matua community in Bengal, should there be mistreatment of Muslims post the NRC's implementation.
“I am shocked to receive this letter. I have informed my department. I will also inform the PM, the home ministry and lodge a case in this connection,” said Thakur during an interaction with the press.
Thakur, the Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, also expressed his intention to inquire if West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who also holds the position of the state's home minister, possessed any awareness regarding the letter purportedly sent by the LeT.
When approached for comment, Bongaon Police District SP Dinesh Kumar mentioned that they had not yet received any formal complaint from the minister.
The individuals claiming affiliation with the LeT, as per a copy of the letter obtained by PTI, identified themselves as members operating in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
