    UP dust storm toll mounts to 51; 83 injured

    At least 51 people were killed and 83 others injured in a severe storm that hit parts of Uttar Pradesh, officials said today. They said 121 houses were damaged in various parts of the state in last night's storm that affected 25 districts.

    Thirteen people lost their lives in Barabanki district, around 28 km from the state capital. Eight of them died when they slipped into the Ghaghra river as they lost their balance due to strong winds, officials said, adding that the local administration was probing the matter. Bareilly accounted for eight deaths, followed by six in Kasganj, four in Bulandshahr, three in Lakhimpur Khiri, and two each in Saharanpur, Pratapgarh and Jaunpur.

    Etawah, Kannauj, Sambhal, Aligarh, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Badaun, Mirzapur, Mathura, Muzaffarnagar and Shamli accounted for one death each.

    Of the 83 injured, the maximum of 17 was reported from Bulandshahr followed by 14 in Saharanpur and 13 in Sambhal. Officials said 121 houses were damaged and 17 animals died in the storm. - PTI

    53 killed, 39 in UP, due to lightning, thunderstorms: MHA

    As many as 53 people were killed, including 39 in Uttar Pradesh, due to lightning and thunderstorms in four states since last night, the Home Ministry said today.

    As per information received from state governments, 39 people died in Uttar Pradesh, nine in Andhra Pradesh, four in West Bengal and one in Delhi due to lightning and thunderstorms during the intervening night of May 13 and 14, a ministry spokesperson said.

    Fifty-three people were injured in Uttar Pradesh, 11 in Delhi and one in West Bengal.

    Toll rises to 38 in UP dust storm

    The toll from a dust storm that hit parts of Uttar Pradesh has risen to 38, officials said today.
    Six people were killed in Kasganj, the worst affected district in the state, an Uttar Pradesh government official said.               

    "Thirty-eight people were killed and 50 injured in the dust storm that lashed various parts of Uttar Pradesh on May 13-14," the official said. Five people each were killed in Bareilly and Barabanki districts.

    Officials said 117 houses were damaged and 13 animals died in the storms. - PTI
