A Delhi-bound Air India flight made an emergency landing in Bengaluru after one of its engines shut down mid-air due to a technical issue on January 5 (Sunday), sources told Moneycontrol. No injuries were reported in the incident.
"One of the engines of the flight (A320) shut down, which forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing. The flight landed under full emergency conditions. All passengers on board are safe," a source told Moneycontrol.
Air India was not immediately available for comment.
Sources said that Air India flight 2820 was scheduled to depart Bengaluru at 5.45 pm but took off from the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) at 7.09 pm. It, however, returned to Bengaluru at 8:11 pm after circling in the air.
A passenger onboard said, "After an hour of panic, the flight landed safely back at the Bengaluru airport. Thanks to the captain for ensuring a safe landing. The security staff was on high alert."
The flight finally left KIA at around 11.47 pm and landed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport at 2.02 am on January 6.
Air India's A320 Neo planes are powered by CFM LEAP engines. Unlike the Pratt & Whitney (PW) engines used in A320 Neo aircraft by other airlines, CFM LEAP engines have not faced significant technical problems.
