A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 51.38 km Bairabi–Sairang railway project in Mizoram and launched three new trains, a viral video of the railway station has sparked outrage on social media.

A video circulating on X shows the newly built Sairang railway station strewn with garbage and left in a state of disarray.

The footage contrasts with the images from the inauguration ceremony, where the station had been decorated and meticulously cleaned ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit.

The scenes of litter and waste soon after prompted sharp criticism of public behavior and civic responsibility.

One social media user remarked: “No one will teach us about the cleanliness! Two pictures showing the reality, mentality and of course responsibility what we do possess towards our great country and mother land. Are we committed to not change forever!”

Another user added: “@mizoram railway station PM Modi announced three new trains and their inauguration ceremony, well decorated and cleaned station, after a few hours of celebration another pic showing the real story of the station filled with garbage & littering ?? ”

Later, Railway Seva said that the matter has been escalated to Divisional Railway Manager for necessary action.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Modi had flagged off the first Rajdhani Express between Aizawl and Delhi along with two other new trains, marking the commissioning of the Bairabi-Sairang broad gauge railway line. The 51.38 km project, executed by NF Railway, was cleared in June after safety inspections.

The Bairabi–Sairang line has been welcomed across Mizoram’s political spectrum. In a rare show of unity, the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), the main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) and the BJP issued a joint statement: “The railway line will link Mizoram with other parts of the country. It will enhance economic, social and cultural growth and open wide opportunities for the people of Mizoram in positive ways.”
