Two days ahead of the massive coronavirus inoculation drive, authorities have released a list of 81 sites that will be part of the immunisation exercise in the national capital, with a senior official saying Covishield will be administered at 75 centres, while Covaxin will be given at the remaining six facilities. As many as 100 people will be vaccinated at each of these locations per day, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced on Thursday.
The locations, with nearly an even split of government and private hospitals, include six central government facilities -- AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital, RML Hospital, Kalawati Saran Children Hospital and two ESI hospitals. The rest 75 sites -- spanning all 11 districts of Delhi, include Delhi government-run facilities -- such as LNJP Hospital, GTB Hospital, Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital, DDU Hospital, BSA Hospital, Delhi State Cancer Institute, ILBS Hospital, and private facilities include Max Hospital, Fortis Hospital, Apollo Hospital and Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

The statement also said that though the efficacy data is not available, the safety parameters of Covaxin are very good and there is a robust immune response seen with this vaccine. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,01,62,738 pushing the national COVID-19 recovery rate to 96.53 percent, while the COVID-19 casefatality rate stands at 1.44 percent.
The COVID-19 active caseload remained below 3 lakh.
There are 2,13,027 active cases of coronavirus infections in the country which comprises 2.02 percent of the total caseload, the data stated.

Jharkhand has not reported any fresh COVID-19 fatality in the past 24 hours, even as 144 new cases pushed the tally to 1,17,384, a health department official said on Friday. The coronavirus death toll remained at 1,048 in the state. "No fresh virus-related death was reported in the state for the third consecutive day on Thursday," the official said.
The new infections include 77 from Ranchi district, East Singhbhum (27) and Dhanbad (9), he said. Jharkhand now has 1,327 active coronavirus cases, while 1,15,009 people have recovered from the disease so far. The state has tested 12,133 samples for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the official added.

The COVID-19 caseload in Andaman and Nicobar Islands mounted to 4,976 as seven more people have tested positive for the disease in the Union Territory, a health department official said on Friday. The fresh cases were detected during contact tracing, he said. The death toll remained at 62 as no new fatality due to the infection was reported in the last 24 hours.
No recovery was reported on Thursday, he said, adding that 4,891 people have so far been cured of the disease in the archipelago. The Union Territory now has 23 active cases. The Andaman and Nicobar administration has conducted 1,99,805 sample tests for COVID-19 so far, and the positivity rate stands at 2.49 per cent, the official added.

West Indies leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr. has tested positive for COVID-19 and ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Bangladesh, the country''s cricket board has said. The 28-year-old Walsh, who is asymptomatic, has returned positive after being tested twice in the last two days here. He had tested negative upon arrival in Dhaka on January 10. But tests on Wednesday and Thursday came out positive, and he is now in self-isolation until he gets two negative results.
"Following PCR tests administered on Wednesday, January 13, Cricket West Indies (CWI) can confirm that Hayden Walsh Jr has tested positive for COVID-19 and will now undergo a period of self-isolation," the board said in a statement. "Walsh will remain in isolation until he returns two negative PCR test results and therefore is unavailable to play in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Bangladesh."
There is no threat to the three-match ODI series, beginning on January 20 in Dhaka, as of now. Cricket West Indies said Walsh had no contact with the other squad members. "The West Indies touring squad has been in individual isolation since arriving in Bangladesh and so there has been no contact between squad members since arrival. Mumbai is setting up facilities to store 1 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines and preparing to vaccinate 50,000 people daily, Bloomberg reported. The city, considered India’s financial hub, has been one of the worst-affected urban centres in the country during the novel coronavirus outbreak. Authorities are hoping that a speedy vaccination drive would enable the reopening of establishments and allow further relaxation of lockdown restrictions.
Mumbai’s Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal told Bloomberg that the city has formed 500 teams comprising two vaccinators, two support staff, and one guard – based on central guidelines. Initially, 12,000 people will be inoculated daily across eight centres. However, Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani said told Bloomberg that this capacity will rise to 50,000 people daily within a week, subject to availability of vaccine doses and public response. Vaccination centres will eventually be opened in each ward.
So far, 1.3 lakh healthcare workers and around 2 lakh frontline workers in Mumbai have been registered through the purpose-built Co-WIN application. The Centre has allocated doses based on these numbers.

According to the report, the schools are planning to make sitting arrangements for only 12-15 students in one classroom, and provide handwashing consoles and sanitisers readily available in the corridors for the students and staff.
Coronavirus Live updates: 109 people test positive for UK variant of coronavirus in India so far
The number of people who have tested positive for the new UK variant of SARS-CoV-2 in the country has climbed to 109, the Union Health Ministry said on January 14. "The total number of persons found infected with the new UK variant genome stands at 109 today," the ministry said.
All these people have been kept in single room isolation in designated healthcare facilities by respective state governments, the ministry had said earlier.
Their close contacts have also been put under quarantine. Comprehensive contact tracing has been initiated for co-travelers, family contacts, and others. Genome sequencing on other specimens is going on, the ministry said.
The situation is under careful watch and regular advice is being provided to the states for enhanced surveillance, containment, testing, and dispatch of samples to INSACOG labs.
The presence of the new UK variant has already been reported by several countries including Denmark, the Netherlands, Australia, Italy, Sweden, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Japan, Lebanon, and Singapore.

Biden proposed $1,400 checks for most Americans, which on top of $600 provided in the most recent COVID-19 bill would bring the total to the $2,000 that Biden has called for. In another tweet, the health minister, however, announced that the self-registration process is yet to start so citizens should remain wary of fraudulent apps.
He wrote the self-registration module of CowinApp has not been released yet. And added, be wary of any fraudulent apps with similar names that may exist on different platforms.

The Health Ministry on Thursday said that the government will compare the Covishield and Covaxin, two Covid vaccines that are authorised for emergency use in India, on different parameters for recordkeeping purposes.
The four comparison parameters will include vaccine platform, physical specifications, dosage, cold chain storage requirements, and minor adverse events following the immunisation.
The health ministry said, "Comparative factsheet for Covid-19 vaccines (Covishield and Covaxin) has been prepared for recordkeeping purposes. American Airlines has told pilots they should take a COVID-19 vaccine on their own time while preparing a broader voluntary program for employee vaccinations at airports around the country.
Vaccines could be ready for Chicago-based staff as soon as mid-February, though American is not requiring them, said Jennifer Saddy, managing director of absence management who is part of the team leading American’s vaccine efforts.
A memo to American’s pilots called the decision to take the vaccines “personal.”
“As such, if you elect to take the vaccine you should schedule it on your days off and so that it does not impact your ability to be in place and operate your scheduled flying given the 48-hour requirement,” American’s managing director of line operations, Chip Long, and managing director of flight operations, John Dudley, said in the memo, reviewed by Reuters.
The Federal Aviation Administration has said pilots and controllers must not fly or conduct safety-related duties for 48 hours after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.

"Great to see our ally India purchasing and supplying millions of doses of COVID vaccines, manufactured in India, to its neighbours and partner nations around the world," Congressman Brad Sherman said in a tweet.
"India is one of the world''s largest manufacturers of inoculations. In a time of great need for the entire international community, India is stepping up to help the world overcome this pandemic," Sherman said.
India plans to purchase millions of COVID-19 vaccine doses and supply them to Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Seychelles and Mauritius.

The first consignment of 32,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine arrived in Arunachal Pradesh in avaccine van from Guwahati yesterday, ahead of the country-wide inoculation drive to start on January 16, an official of the National Health Mission's (NHM) said.
