Coronavirus India News Highlights: Today is the 139th day since India implemented a nationwide lockdown, to help curb the novel coronavirus pandemic. So far, India has recorded 21,53,010 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 43,379 deaths. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have reported the highest number of cases. However, infections are rising rapidly in states like Assam and Karnataka. Yet, India’s recovery rate continues to rise and now stands at 68.8 percent. 'Unlock 3.0' is underway.     Coronavirus in Punjab LIVE Updates | Principal secretary to Punjab Governor V P Singh Badnore tests COVID-19 positive

    The principal secretary to Punjab Governor V P Singh Badnore has tested positive for COVID-19, an official spokesperson said on Sunday. J M Balamurugan has been home quarantined, the spokesperson said. However, Badnore, who is also the administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, has tested negative for the infection. A two-day COVID-19 testing exercise with rapid-antigen kits was carried out at the Raj Bhawan in which 336 people, including security personnel, officers and staff members, were tested for the disease, the spokesperson said.

    Coronavirus India LIVE updates | These 13 districts account for 14% of COVID-19 deaths in India

    Thirteen districts across eight states were singled out by the Centre on August 8 for reporting a high COVID-19 mortality rate. The COVID-19 mortality rate in these areas is far higher than the national average and together they contribute to 14 percent of all COVID-19 deaths reported in India. “These districts account for nearly nine percent of India's active cases and about 14 percent of COVID-19 deaths. They also report low tests per million and high confirmation percentage,” the Health Ministry informed.
