Iranian Presiden Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday that 25 million people may have been infected with the coronavirus in Iran, although health officials later sought to play down the estimate.

Amid reports that COVID-19 drug Remdesivir is being black-marketed at almost four times its retail price, the Maharashtra government has placed an order for 60,000 vials of the medicine. The government has also placed an order for six lakh tablets of Favipiravir and 20,000 vials of Tocilizumab.
The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) placed the order for theRemdesivir vials at Rs 3,392.48 per vial, while Tocilizumab was acquired at Rs 30,870 per vial, and Favipiravir at Rs 1999.20 per strip.

Iranian health officials sought on Sunday to play down the president’s estimate that some 25 million people have been infected with the coronavirus, saying it was based on serological blood tests that measure exposure to the illness and that cannot be relied on to show the current state of disease.
The 25 million figure put forward by Rouhani on Saturday is nearly a third of the population and massively higher than the official number of COVID-19 cases. Official case numbers rose to 273,788 on Sunday, with 14,188 deaths, Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said. A Health Ministry statement carried by Iranian news media said the figure given by the president was based on numbers produced by a deputy in the ministry.

The West Bengal government has added 63 areas to the list of 'broad-based' containment zones in the state, increasing the count to 739, amid the strict lockdown clamped in all such places to stem the spread of the coronavirus disease, a senior official said on Sunday.
Currently, North 24 Parganas district has the highest number of containment zones at 113 with the addition of 18 more areas, while South 24 Parganas has 67, up by 12, according to the state government's website 'Egiye Bangla'.

There was no question of extending the ongoing week-long lockdown here set to end on July 22, newly appointed commissioner of the city civic body N Manjunatha Prasad said on Sunday, amid speculations it may be continued for another fortnight in view of rising cases.

During the phone conversation, Palaniswami apprised Modi that 48,000 coronavirus tests - a national high - were being done daily (average) in Tamil Nadu, an official release said here.
The state government has been taking all steps for prevention of virus spread and to facilitate an early return to normalcy, the statement quoted Palaniswami as having told Modi.

Scientists have confirmed for the first time that the novel coronavirus behind the COVID-19 pandemic cannot be transmitted to people by mosquitoes, a finding that adds evidence to WHO's claim that the disease is not mosquito-borne.
The research, published in the journal Scientific Reports, provided the first experimental evidence on the capacity of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 disease, to infect and be transmitted by mosquitoes.
"Here we provide the first experimental data to investigate the capacity of SARS-CoV-2 to infect and be transmitted by mosquitoes," the study noted. (PTI)

Exposure to SARS, other coronaviruses may make some people immune to COVID-19: Report
A study by Singapore-based researchers have found that some individuals may have developed immunity to the novel coronavirus – scientific name SARS-CoV-2– due to exposure to other coronaviruses.
As per the study, published in Nature journal on July 15, a few people may have developed an immunity to COVID-19 even without being exposed to it due to having been previously infected by other coronaviruses.

A 50-year-old woman died of COVID-19 at a hospital in Jammu today, taking the total number of fatalities due to the infection in Jammu and Kashmir to 237, officials said. This will be the 19th death in the Jammu region, which has recorded a total of 2,687 COVID-19 cases as compared to 10,511 cases in Kashmir with 218 deaths.
Of the total 13,198 cases in the entire Jammu and Kashmir till Saturday evening, 7,165 patients -- 1,709 in the Jammu region and 5,456 in Kashmir -- have been cured of the infection, bringing down the number active cases in the union territory to 5,797. Pakistan's coronavirus tally reached 263,496 with the detection of 1,579 new cases in the last 24 hours, reported news agency PTI citing the health ministry. Of the total COVID-19 infections, 2,04,276 patients have recovered so far, it said. Forty-six more fatalities were recorded overnight, taking the nationwide coronavirus death toll to 5,568. Pakistan's total coronavirus tally now stands at 263,496, the ministry said.

The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has started free ambulance service for COVID-19 patients in need of mobility support in the national capital.

DSGMC President, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, said more ambulances will be made available as and when required.
