Coronavirus News Highlights: Today is the ninety-eighth day since India implemented a nationwide lockdown, to curb the novel coronavirus pandemic. India has so far recorded 5,66,840 lakh cases, which includes 16,893 deaths. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Gujarat have reported the highest number of cases. However, the recovery rate is rising and now stands at 59.1 percent. The government released guidelines for 'Unlock 2.0' yesterday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be addressing the nation at 4.00 pm today.
Globally, there have been over 1.03 crore confirmed cases of COVID-19. More than 5.04 lakh people have died so far.
Delhi records 2,199 COVID-19 cases; 62 more die
The national capital recorded 2,199 fresh coronavirus cases, and 62 deaths due to the disease in the last 24 hours, authorities said on Tuesday. The total number of COVID-19 patients in Delhi now stands at 87,360.
The death toll due to the disease is 2,742, according to the latest Delhi health department bulletin.The Delhi government had earlier predicted that "there will be 1 lakh cases in the national capital by June 30 and 15,000 beds will be needed". (PTI)

The toll due to COVID-19 in Jammu and Kashmir crossed the 100-mark on Tuesday as six more patients succumbed to the disease, while the union territory's tally rose to 7,497 after 260 fresh cases were detected, officials said.Five of these deaths were reported from Kashmir and one from Jammu, they said. Wedding ceremony sets off biggest COVID-19 infection chain in Bihar
A wedding ceremony in rural Patnaa fortnight ago where the groom was running high fever, two days before he died and his body cremated without being tested for COVID 19, appears to have set off the biggest infection chain in Bihar so far, health department officials said on Tuesday.
More than 100 people have tested positive in Paliganj sub-division of Patna district, about 55 km from the state capital, in the last few days, out of over 350 who have beentested upon contact tracing, they said. Fifteen of hisrelatives who attended the wedding tested positive for thecontagion and apparently infected others. (PTI)

Continued spread of COVID-19 pandemic poses risk to Indian economy, says IMF official
The main downside risk to India's growth forecast is the continued spread of the COVID-19 pandemic as the health crisis has not yet been contained, a top IMF official said on Tuesday, noting that the country's near-term growth outlook continues to be clouded by the global and domestic slowdown and uncertainties relating to the coronavirus.
Recently, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its report projected the Indian economy to contract by -4.5 per cent in 2020, which is the slowest Indian growth that it has in its record since 1961.
"The main downside risk to India's growth forecast is the continued spread of the pandemic as the health crisis has not yet been contained. Further outbreaks could require additional lockdowns to contain the pandemic. Concerns about the virus could also dampen consumer confidence and delay the economic recovery,Chang Yong Rhee, who is director of IMF's Asia and Pacific Department, said. (PTI)

The Delhi government on Tuesday extended till September 30 its scheme offering a one-time waiver of water bill arrears and late payment surcharge in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. Under the scheme, launched in August last year, all categories of houses get an exemption from late fee payments, while their pending water bills are waived partly or fully depending on the housing category.
"In wake of Covid-19 outbreak, the water bill waiver scheme of the Delhi Jal Board has been extended by three months and will now end on September 30," the water utility's vice-chairman, Raghav Chadha, tweeted. (PTI)

Rigorous lockdown restrictions helped the islands stay coronavirus-free before the infection knocked the doors of the islands on June 10, when two persons, who flew back home from outside tested positive. Fifty-three more Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have tested positive for COVID-19, taking the overall infections in the largest border guarding force to over 1,000, officials said on Tuesday.As per latest data, out of the total 1,018 coronavirus cases in the force, 659 personnel have recovered and 354 are under treatment.

Fitch cuts India growth projection to 8% for FY22; economy to shrink by 5% this fiscal
Fitch Ratings on Tuesday cut India's growth forecast for 2021-22 fiscal to 8 per cent from 9.5 per cent projected last month. It, however, retained its projection of Indian economy contracting by 5 per cent in the current fiscal.Indian economic growth stood at an estimated 4.2 per cent in 2019-20.
In its June update of Global Economic Outlook, Fitch projected Indian economy to grow 5.5 per cent in 2022-23."In India, where authorities imposed one of the most stringent lockdowns globally to try to halt the spread of the virus, measures are being relaxed only very gradually; with a limited policy easing response and ongoing financial sector fragilities, we have pared our 2021 forecast to 8 per cent from 9.5 per cent in the previous GEO," Fitch said. Piramal Glass sees surge in vial demand due to COVID-19 - executive
India's Piramal Glass Pvt Ltd has seen a 30 percentjump in sales of speciality vials used to bottle medicines in the June quarter, led by a surge in demand as more drugs are being made to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, a senior executive told Reuters.
The privately held Mumbai-based firm, part of Indian billionaire Ajay Piramal's drugs-to-financial services conglomerate, is projecting a 30% bump in revenue from Type 1 borosilicate glass vials in 2020-21, Piramal Glass Vice-Chairman Vijay Shah said last week. "There has been an upsurge in demand because of some adjunct therapies being used in hospitals for COVID patients," Shah said.

A quinquagenarian brought dead to a hospital here has tested positive for COVID-19, raising the death toll in Assam to 12, while 41 new cases pushed the total tally to 7,835 on Tuesday, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
The city resident was brought dead to Guwahati Medical College Hospital on June 22. His samples were sent for examination and it was found that he had contracted the viral disease, the minister said. (PTI)
Coronavirus impact | Eight core industries' output contracts 23.4% in May
The output of eight core infrastructure industries shrank by 23.4 percent in May due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown, according to the official data. The eight core sectors had expanded by 3.8 percent in May 2019, the data released by the Commerce and Industry Ministry on Tuesday showed.
Barring fertiliser, all seven sectors - coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, steel, cement, and electricity - had recorded negative growth in May.
During April-May 2020-21, the sectors' output dipped by 30 percent as compared to 4.5 per cent in the same period previous year. (PTI)

The Hero Women's Indian Open golf tournament was on Tuesday cancelled in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.The tournament, co-sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour in 2010, was scheduled for October. It will now return to the Gary Player Course at DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurugram in October next year.

The recovery rate of COVID-19 patients in the country is fast approaching 60 per cent, with the Union Health Ministry attributing it tocollective and focussed efforts of the Centre and states for containment and management of the pandemic. ASHA workers played critical role in COVID-19 management in UP, tracked 30.43 lakh migrant returnees
In a major exercise, 1.6 lakh accredited social health activists have tracked in two phases over 30.43 lakh migrants who returned to Uttar Pradesh during the COVID-19 lockdown and assisted the state government in contact tracing and community surveillance, the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday.
The ASHAs tracked 11.24 lakh migrant returnees in the first phase and 19.19 lakh in the second, the ministry said, adding that they not only identified 7,965 persons with symptoms but also regularly followed up on their health status. "With the surge in the cases of COVID-19 in the country and the influx of migrant population from hotspot areas, one of the major challenges in Uttar Pradesh was to cater to the healthcare needs of returnees and arrest the spread in its rural population. "ASHAs have played a critical role in supporting the state's COVID-19 management during this crisis," the ministry said. (PTI)
