Chhattisgarh Election Result 2018: Trends show Congress taking a clear lead

As of 4:00 pm, Congress is leading in 68 seats while BJP is ahead in 13 seats. Others including independent candidates are leading in 9 seats.

Counting trends show Congress taking a clear lead over the Bharatiya Janata Party leading (BJP) in Chhattisgarh elections by a big margin.

As of 4:00 pm, Congress is leading in 68 seats while BJP is ahead in 13 seats. Others including independent candidates are leading in 9 seats.

Even as the counting is underway, trends over the course of the day have indicated a comfortable Congress lead.

Tamradhwaj Sahu, senior Congress leader and the party's head of OBC cell, said that the party's victory is the "victory of the people" and the defeat of "bad governance."

"I credit this win to the people of the state and to Rahul Gandhi... We are back in the state and it has been made possible because the people were angry with the BJP," Sahu said.

The Congress appeared all set to shatter BJP leader Raman Singh's dream of a consecutive fourth term as Chhattisgarh chief minister, as per early trends for the state Assembly elections.

As of 3:00 pm, Congress was leading in 67 seats while BJP was ahead in 17 seats. Others including independent candidates were leading in 6 seats.

As of 2:00 pm, Congress was leading in 63 seats while BJP was ahead in 21 seats. Others including independent candidates were leading in 6 seats.

As of 12:00 pm, Congress was leading in 65 seats while BJP was ahead in 19 seats. Others including independent candidates were leading in 6 seats.

As of 11:00 am, Congress is leading in 58 seats while BJP is ahead in 22 seats. Others including independent candidates are leading in 10 seats.

As of 10:00 am, Congress is leading in 59 seats while BJP is ahead in 22 seats. Others including independent candidates are leading in 7 seats.

As of 9:30 am, the early trend seems to be reversing with Congress taking a lead in 55 seats while the BJP trailing in 20 seats. Other parties including independent parties are leading in 8 seats.

The early trend, as of 9:00 am, showed BJP was leading in 20 seats, Congress in 13 while the Ajit Jogi-led Janta Congress Chhattisgarh-Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) alliance in one, from Marwahi, where Jogi is contesting.

Chhattisgarh voted in two phases, the first phase with 18 seats going to polls in Naxal-affected districts of the state while the second phase on November 20 for the remaining 72 seats. The voter turnout in Chhattisgarh was 76.35 percent against 77.40 percent in 2013.

In 2013, BJP had bagged 49 seats. Congress had finished second with 39 seats.  A Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and an Independent candidate had won one seat each.
